produces quality stage plays that are both educational and entertaining. The plays produced by ABCT are all housed at 1333 South Carrollton Avenue inside the school*s 300 seat auditorium. Situations and characters of the productions reflect relevant issues in the lives of the immediate New Orleans community both past and present. Cast members are usually residents of the City of New Orleans and their theater skill level varies between advanced and first time on stage. Diversity among the skill level of actors for its productions does not create a problem for the theater. The diversity in skill level creates a positive learning environment for those of all theater levels. ABCT believes such diversity is the cornerstone for bringing the young and old together which serves to bridge any type of gaps between the generations.
Councilman Oliver Thomas - The legendary Irma Thomas - Writer/Director Anthony Bean - The late Dr. Morris F.X. Jeff Jr. - Director/Writer John Oneal.Expression is a dominant aspect of the theater. In order for the actors to develop their character and deliver a convincing performance, they must be able to express the inner and outer most feelings of their characters. It is this aspect of dramatic art ABCT wishes to cultivate into the hearts and minds of its young men and women. Teaching the younger generation the art of expression by means of verbal and non-verbal communication instills a skill that benefits for life. The development of such a skill can thus be carried over to real life situations. For example, the skill of adequately expressing one*s ability or belief only helps during college entrance interviews, job interviews as well as school or career related presentations. The most fundamental goal of ABCT is to present productions that will entertain its audience. Various scripts are submitted to the theater for production by different playwrights, actors, and members of the staff and faculty. It is the duty of the production committee, composed of members of its Board of Directors, staff, administration and the Artistic Director. The Artistic Director has the final say on productions produced in house by the theater company. A theater season is formatted from the various scripts analyzed by the production committee. A theater season features a series of 4 or 5 plays that will be produced during the year. A mixture of dynamic comedic and dramatic plays is the ultimate goal. However it is possible for some seasons to feature more of one particular type of play based on their availability. Once a season is assembled, the artistic director will seek to cast the individual plays by holding open unbiased auditions.
